Getting the job done away from the cameras

Etienne Schneider

Sometimes things turn out differently than expected. This truly applies to Etienne Schneider, the freshly appointed Minister of the Economy and Foreign Trade who will start his position on February 1, 2012. His predecessor, Jeannot Krecké, announced his retirement from office a couple of months ago. Mr Schneider is known to be a determined man with a very pragmatic approach. “Together we can achieve more”

These words by Luxembourg Minister of Finance, Luc Frieden, summed up the discussions at a seminar organised by LFF with the support of the Qatar Financial Centre Authority (QFCA). This event, which is the first to follow the signature of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Grand Duchy and the State of Qatar six months ago, was designed to foster contacts between members of the two respective financial centres. Minister Frieden’s words were echoed by Mr Abdulrahman Al Shaibi, Managing Director of the QFCA: “We have so many things in common”, he said; “we can learn from each other’s experience.” Lire plus

How much change can you handle?

Royal Bank of Scotland CEO Stephen Hester will not be accepting the one million pound bonus that drew criticism from the British public and politicians, the bank recently announced. Rob Mellor from PwC UK said in a statement that it is easy for politicians to attack banks on remunerations and bonuses without offering real solutions. He was one of the panellists at a PwC conference held in Luxembourg on the Alternative Investment Industry. Lire plus

Industrie financière luxembourgeoise: Stabilisation en 2010

Les effets de la crise financière ont continué à se faire ressentir pendant l’année 2010, mais les activités de l’industrie financière luxembourgeoise se sont plus ou moins stabilisées, constate une étude réalisée par Deloitte pour le Haut Comité de la place financière. Si la reprise des marchés et des activités intervenue en 2010 se traduit par une progression des revenus, principalement issus des commissions, les banques subissent les effets de la réduction des activités d’intermédiation. Lire plus

Financial markets will be driven by the uncertainty related to its political and economic challenges.
