Luc Frieden visits Washington to explain the Luxembourg position on tax matters

On 23 March, the Minister of the Treasury, Luc Frieden, made a rapid eight hour visit to Washington.  In the context of discussions currently taking place in the United States concerning jurisdictions that are not cooperative in tax matters, and just days before the G20 meeting, Minister Frieden was keen to inform his counterparts at the US Ministry of Finance and the tax administration about Luxembourg’s new position in the area of the exchange of information on request in conformity with OECD standards. The US Authorities welcomed Luxembourg’s desire to cooperate in the international fight against the violation of tax laws.

Thanks to the strong political and economic ties that exist between the Unites States of America and Luxembourg, the two sides immediately began negotiations for an early amendment to the double taxation treaty between the two countries to bring it into line with the OECD model tax convention.

Minister Frieden also met members of the two houses of Congress in order to convince them that Luxembourg should not figure on any of the lists that currently appear in certain draft laws under discussion in Congress.
